2024 *Knowing* Riesling
Torquay VIC
On the nose this wine reminds me why I love Riesling so much, I feel smacked in the face by the crushed rock and marl limestone that I have trampled on for the last few years. Great Riesling speaks soil truth so well when the relationship between vine and maker lets it shine through the wine and into the body, crackling down with each sip. Ozone, jasmine, tangerine, sea water, cilantro stems, white jelly bean and bee pollen followed by the smells I get when I grab my spice basket and half of the jars are open and a cloud of curry spices fills the air. On the palate even before the flavours rush in, the shape of the wine curves and moves with a oneness that I have spent 10 years trying to weave my Rieslings into. The 19 grams of rs is taken over by the chalky phenolics that seem to be anchored in the centre of the mouth, alway pulling the wine back to a dry place after it drifts in and out of acid and sweetness, like the moon with the tide. Rock salt, white grapefruit pulp, sugar snap peas almost underripe, vapours of crushed shell and limestone that rise after a rain and become the air you breath and taste, blanco tequila and baby limes but most of all this Riesling tastes like the fruit it came from and that in itself is all I could ever ask of it.
