The Feelings & The Story
The first time I made this wine was in 2023, and I was way out of my depth. Having worked at Robert Weil for a harvest, where I participated in the selection process for BA and TBA, didn’t mean I could just pull this wine from that experience. However, I believe the universe throws us some challenges and if we reach deep enough into our arsenals, magic can happen.
The idea with this site is to try and make as many shades of Riesling as possible to fully express its rareness in liquid form. Something tells me the botrytis lens will be that wine, but we are just at the beginning of this journey together and only time will tell.
I believe this style of wine is the real truth teller, the last to harvest in the Southern Hemisphere; mummified by more weather than the grapes can almost take. I chased this wine so far to the end, all we had left was each other. To be honest I was chasing another form of it from the past, instead of embracing its expression of vintage and what Mother Nature and the grower gave that year. This was a Buddha moment for me and I expanded as a maker from it.
Tasting Notes
White nectarine and crystallised honey, followed by the smell of a Hawaiian botanical garden on a hot day, think hundreds of ginger flowers filling the humid air with their perfume. There’s a depth to this wine that pulls you in and almost warms you with its golden hues; colour you can taste. At first sip, the wine coats the palate like a slow moving stream and just when you think it will stick to the sides, chalky phenolics and crunchy acidity pluck it from your cheeks. This slow moving stream has now hit a rapid and the liquid is building momentum, leaving you capsized and filled with the rush of adrenaline. The energy is a kaleidoscope of emotions and it will continue to shape shift as time goes by. A comet on an extreme path to the abyss.
